Matthew
Shepherd
Matthew Shepherd has over a dozen years' experience in
radio training, journalism and management.
From a background in radio and community journalsim, he became the first
full-time Station Manager of the fledgeling CJMQ 88.9 FM, a campus/community
radio station serving the Anglophones of Lennoxville, one of the greatest
concentrations of minority-language residents in Quebec outside Montreal.
In that capacity, he was responsible for establishing the station from
scratch, creating an advertising structure, program schedule, community
outreach program, and legal structure for the station.
Following this, he continued his work with the station as an advisor
and trainer, consulting on legal issues as the President of their Board
of Directors and training the bulk of the on-air staff. He also served
as a consultant for another community station in its planning stages,
helping draft a constitution and advising on legal issues for a future
radio project in the Brome-Mississquoi region.
He has worked for the CBC as both a local and regional
reporter, with training in CBC broadcasting, journalism and technical
standards augmenting his considerable background.
Since he began to work with RTS in 2003, Mr. Shepherd has held a number
of successful training sessions in northern Quebec. He has trained members
of the James Bay Cree Communications Society network in advertising
structures and techniques, promotions, public relations, field recording,
and digital audio and editing in community radio, with participants
from Cree communities including Mistissini, Chisasibi, Waskaganish,
Wemindji, Eastmain, Nemaska, Ouje-Bougamou and Whapmagoostui.
