THE CREW: After the Famine
Alec G. Macleod, Director, has over
thirty years of experience in documentary film making and related
multi-media pursuits. While much of his work as researcher/writer/director
was done for the National Film Board, he also has extensive credits
in the private sector as a script writer and story editor for feature
films as well as media-related corporate and technical commissions. Rene Sioui Labelle, Cinematographer has over twenty years of experience as a D.O.P, first working with Alec MacLeod on the award-winning NFB documentary Acts of Defiance (1992) about the Oka Crisis. Being a Native North American (Wendat), he was clearly visible and as such at risk in filmic situations that involved covering racist demonstrations. When the situation became threatening, MacLeod would intervene with comments like "Back off, he's Italian!" which usually worked. In that commission, Labelle fearlessly filmed under fire (tear gas - bullets) to bring in footage that became germane to the final look of the film - an intense and intimate portrait of a nation under siege. Subsequent work for the NFB with Alanais Obomsawin and others on Native issues garnered him further acclaim as a resourceful and innovative filmmaker. He also worked with Outawork Films on the documentary short Fennario's War (2008). Yurij Luhovy, Executive Producer
has worked in the film industry for over 35 years. A member
of the Academy of Canadian Cinema. Yurij has worked in features with
Paul Almond, MGM and many co-productions; French, Italian and Yugoslavian.
As an award-winning filmmaker, he has worked on documentaries for
CBC and the National Film Board of Canada and many independent productions.
An accomplished film editor, Yurij believes only in quality work,
and has an unbelievable drive and determination to accomplish what
he sets up to do. His current production in progress is Genocide Revealed,
a film about famine in Soviet Ukraine Hyman Glustein, Producer
is a broadcaster who has worked with many community radio, cable and
telecom operations. He is President of Groupe Leclaire GLG Inc., parent
firm of RTS Canada, and was Producer of Fennario's War: The War To
End All Wars (2008). Marianna O'Gallagher, History Consultant raised public awareness of the Grosse Isle quarantine station where 6,000 famine-Irish died. In 1973, O'Gallagher founded Irish Heritage Quebec to preserve and promote Quebec Irish history. In 1981, she launched her own publishing company, Carraig Books, specializing in works from Quebec with an Irish connection. During the 1980s and 1990s, she served on a government advisory committee, working tirelessly to commemorate the Irish famine and its consequences for Quebec and Canadian history. She was subsequently instrumental in the creation of the Grosse Isle and Irish Memorial National Historic Site in 1996. As a member of the Historical Society of Quebec, she served on the organizing committee for Quebec City's 400th anniversary. Her previous honours include the Ordre national du Québec (1998), the Order of Canada (2002). |
